Abstract | In The Arcades Project, Benjamin explores the different aspects of nineteenth-century culture, in search of a historical reality to which people can awake in a revelatory act of political consciousness. However, the uncanny effects of his archival approach impinge on this revelatory and sublime process. Rather than revealing the political, economic, and technological latent content of the past, representations of the material object confront consciousness with the unfamiliar and abject forms of the repressed collective unconscious. The Gothic tropes of Benjamin‘s text are the traces of the melancholy haunting his concept of a demystifying revelation of historical and material truth. |

AbstractList | Buck-Morss underlines Benjamin's dogged work of excavation and explosion of the consumerist's dreamworld, which aims at turning the commodity into an image whose mythic status can be debunked.9 At the same time Pensky argues that 'melancholy occupies the space that separates Benjamin's "messianic" and "materialistic" gaze - it is a space that is carved between the subject and the object by a question concerning the possibility of meaning; a space Benjamin sought his life long to fill with the storehouse of images ... constructed in his shocking, healing writing'.10 Here I propose to explore the other side of the looking-glass to show that the Gothic tropes of Benjamin's archival engineering are the traces of the melancholy and nihilism haunting his concept of a redemptive and demystifying revelation of historical and material truth. [...]Benjamin's approach can be historicized if we consider it from the standpoint of Michel Rabaté's analysis of the role of textual haunting in modernism. [...]history is cannibalistic, and memory becomes the closed space where two contradictory operations confront each other: oblivion, which does not amount to passivity, loss, but instead to an act against the past; the mnemonic trace, which amounts to the return of the forgotten, that is to say, a past action reduced to disguise. Benjamin's experimental historiography is intended to set the historian on the track of material objects and architectural sites that will reveal to the collective the latent economic and technological content of history. [...]the mortified and decaying objects of the past come back to life, and their originary, materialist meaning is resurrected. In The Arcades Project, Benjamin explores the different aspects of nineteenth-century culture, in search of a historical reality to which people can awake in a revelatory act of political consciousness. |
