Although the process has been in use for a long time, and the earliest sand blasting operations can be dated back to the middle of the last century, blast cleaning is certainly not limited to the realms of intermediate technology.
The origins of blast cleaning and developments leading to the metallic abrasives currently used are reviewed. The five-stage manufacture of steel shot and grit is described and factors influencing the choices between air- and impeller-blasting machines and ball shot and chilled iron grit are discussed. Details are given of the plant and practices used to obtain low surface-profile finishes for the production of ultra-smooth ship hulls, and to clean the 5000 tons of steel box girders of the Foyle Bridge now nearing completion in Northern Ireland.--J.R.
