AbstractList | This is a brief review paper on microwave radiometry as a remote sensing tool in geoscientific investigations. Topics covered include basic radiometric principles, radiometer receivers, and applications. This paper is one in a series of mini-reviews sponsored by the Wave Propagation Standards Committee of IEEE and is intended primarily for those persons who have not had occasion to study extensively in the subject. The use of microwave radiometry as a remote sensing tool in geoscientific investigations is discussed. Factors affecting the interaction of the sensor with the target are reviewed. The principles of operation of the total-power radiometer and the Dicke comparison radiometer are summarized. The choice of the sensor parameters for geoscientific applications is dictated by considerations including the characteristic to be measured, imaging restraints, and atmospheric effects. |
