Abstract Aphasic language deficits are seen as gradient deviations from the nonpathological norms, and it has been claimed that persons suffering from posterior (Wernicke's) aphasia show little, if any syntactic aberrations. The present quantitative analysis of pathological syntactic patterns in Wernicke's aphasia deals with Finnish, a grammatically free word-order language, but with a canonical SVO order. In contrast to the preservation of syntax hypothesis, the present persons with posterior aphasia show decreased syntactic complexity, operation-alised through various structures, in their narratives.
AbstractList Aphasic language deficits are seen as gradient deviations from the nonpathological norms, and it has been claimed that persons suffering from posterior (Wernicke's) aphasia show little, if any syntactic aberrations.
The neurolinguistic description of Wernicke's aphasia as a largely semantic & lexical aphasia, with the syntactic abilities of an afflicted speaker's brain intact, is challenged. Finnish subjects (N = 2) suffering from Wernicke's aphasia were recorded in interviews that produced 2,840 clauses which were compared with speech from their respective regions of origin by normal speakers as to lexical errors, sentence length, constituent complexity, word order & case marking, end-weightedness, & ellipsis. It was discovered that while the Wernicke speakers were more sophisticated syntactically than victims of Broca's aphasia, they exhibited shorter & less complex sentences, relied more heavily on canonical subject-object-verb word order, & had lower ellipsis rates than the normal speaker corpus. 7 Tables, 29 References.
