Calystegines in Solanum lycocarpum and Other Wild Solanum Fruits and Their α-Glucosidase Inhibitory Activity

The present work aims to investigate the α-glucosidase inhibitory activity displayed by calystegine-enriched extracts from fruits of the following wild Solanum species: S. lycocarpum A.St.-Hil., S. paniculatum L., S. crinitum Lam ., and S. acanthodes Hook.f., Solanaceae. Plant crude extracts were lo...

Summary:The present work aims to investigate the α-glucosidase inhibitory activity displayed by calystegine-enriched extracts from fruits of the following wild Solanum species: S. lycocarpum A.St.-Hil., S. paniculatum L., S. crinitum Lam ., and S. acanthodes Hook.f., Solanaceae. Plant crude extracts were loaded on an ion-exchange resin separation system to obtain extracts enriched in calystegines. The inhibitory activities of the total calystegine extracts against Saccharomyces cerevisiae α-glucosidase were measured spectrophotometrically. Analyses were performed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, and gas chromatography with flame ionization detection. All extracts exhibited inhibitory activities against α-glucosidase from S. cerevisiae . Calystegines A 3 , B 1 , B 2 , and C 1 were detected in all extracts. Graphical abstract
