Abstract Literature data on the properties of fractions of different density obtained by liquid centrifuging of metamorphic coal reveal the relation between the Roga index RI and the free-swelling index SI , which describe different aspects of clinkering. A correlation is obtained between RI and SI , whose characteristics depend on the metamorphic stage of the coal. The results suggest that RI should be replaced by SI in dividing coal with a plastic-layer thickness y < 6 mm (D, SS, and TS coal) into subgroups, within the framework of the unified coal classification (State Standard GOST 25543-88).
