Abstract Assembly calls for a fluent supply of non-identical parts in a choice and sequence, given by the structure of final products. This interferes strongly with the present organisation of part production, dealing rather with complete batches of indentical parts. A new cathegory of production means, these being the flexible manufacturing systems with random flow of parts and tools has appreared as an important step to the solution of the mentioned contradiction. One of such systems has recently been put into operation in the Czechoslovak TOS Olomouc plańt and the paper describes some new approaches to the solution of unmanned machines, control structures and control strategies in similar highly automated manufacturing systems.
