Hello, my name is Bob Tombs and I'm senior designer at Cornell University Press. Welcome to Toronto. This session is called 'Why Design Is Important: Five Designers Speak to Non-Designers.' I don't actually know what the breakdown between the 'designers' and the 'non-designers' in this room is, but for the purposes of this discussion, we are the five designers. In accepting this conference's invitation to put together a panel to discuss design and production values, I accepted to do, in a formal context, what I do informally anyhow, that is, speak from the portable pulpit that is design. And assume the risks of taking such a stance. I am pleased to introduce this wonderful panel of working designers, ambassadors, such as they are, of British, Dutch, and North American tradition. I thank you all for helping to propagate the need to slay the dragon of mediocrity... And we even have a St. George! Some of you may have heard George Mackie's wonderful lecture yesterday on Rudolph Koch, Berthold Wolpe, and George Mackie. Koch and Wolpe were in good company. George was for many years head of the Department of Design and Crafts at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen while simultaneously working as a freelance designer for Edinburgh University Press. He has, over the years, won many awards in our book shows. In fact, between 1977 and 1979, his designs won eight percent of the entire selection! His first project was done for Edinburgh in, I think, 1953, a date firmly planted in the letterpress era. In 1973, he was elected a Royal Designer to Industry, or R.D.I., an elite group of English designers that includes, past and present, such gifted notables as Eric Gill, Eileen Gray, Mary Quant, Peter Blake, Matthew Carter, and Richard Eckersley. And George was a bomber pilot for the RAF during the Second World War, logging over 1500 hours flying his crew of nine and Sterling aircraft across the English Channel on missions over Germany, and to more distant airfields in Cairo, Ceylon, Calcutta, and Karachi. Currently, George lives in a 1620s Jacobean townhouse in Stamford, England, something I am very jealous of. And he is doing some fine work for Cornell.
