AbstractList Consumption of polycrystalline cub boron nitride in tooling is growing, despite it comparatively high price and design restrictions.
Consumption of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride in tooling is growing despite its comparatively high price and design restrictions. The properties of PcBN are compared with those of other cutting materials such as tungsten carbide, alumina, sialon, and silicon nitride. Diagrams illustrate Vickers hardness, transverse rupture strength, hot hardness, and cutting performance. Edge tipped, laminated, and solid types of PcBN cutting inserts and CVD coated silicon nitride tools are illustrated and the microstructures of PcBN grades and sialon and Al2O3-TiC mixed ceramics are presented. 12 refs.
