Abstract This paper is mainly concerned with the finite-time partial-nodes-based fault estimation issue for time-varying complex networks with binary encoding schemes subject to multiplicative noises. Binary encoding schemes are employed concerning the communication from the sensor to the remote estimator. Random bit error is taken into account as a result of channel noise, whose influence is represented via an equivalent stochastic noise. In view of some unavailable measurements, only measurements from partial nodes are adopted to carry on the estimation work, and the model of time-varying fault and state estimators is constructed. By virtue of performance analysis of stochastic finite-time boundedness for the estimation error dynamics, sufficient condition is developed by which the existence of desired estimators is guaranteed and such time-varying estimators are designed. Via solving a sequence of linear matrix inequalities, gains of the finite-time estimators are obtained straightforward. The correctness of the designed finite-time time-varying fault estimators is testified using two illustrative simulation examples.
