Abstract The primary focus of the machining economics optimization article referred to by Sarper (1995) in his note is to evaluate the performance of several nonlinear programming algorithms in solving machining economic optimization models. Duffuaa, Shuaib, and Alam (1993) reviewed the literature and selected 5 machining models. They observed that these models are nonlinear, non-convex programs. Therefore, the performance of the algorithms was expected to be different from their performance on models in other areas. The models are solved using five algorithms which are: 1. sequential unconstrained minimization techniques, 2. geometry, and 3. box, 4. Hill, and 5. the generalized reduced gradient method (GRG). The criteria used to evaluate performance of the algorithms is presented. Based on this criteria and empirical results, GRG implemented as GINO outperformed the other methods. A response to the comments given in Sarper's note is presented.
