Abstract Today, solid modelling technology is widespread in the automotive, aerospace, construction, and appliance industries. Growth has been fuelled by the falling prices of entry level CAD systems and by their availability on inexpensive personal computers. This special issue contains 7 papers from the bi-annual ACM Symposium on Solid Modelling showing the latest advances in the subject: Non-local blending of boundary models; Inferring 3D models from freehand sketches and constraints; A mechanism for persistently naming topological entities in history-based parametric solid models; Polyhedral modelling with multiprecision integer arithmetic; Robust algorithms for face-based representations; Kinematic tolerance analysis; and Assembly sequencing with toleranced parts.
