Abstract Non-fragile H∞ filtering issue is examined for a kind of multi-rate sampling time-varying cyber physical systems (CPSs) under communication protocol suffering periodic denial of service (DoS) attacks. Weighted try-once-discard (WTOD) protocol, a scheduling rule for transmission order of sensor signal components, is implemented to reduce network congestion and communication burden. An indicator variable is utilized to describe switching between attack periods and sleeping periods, and a random variable that follows the Bernoulli distribution is employed to describe probabilistic occurrence of random DoS jamming attacks. We aim to design a filter that guarantees H∞ performance criteria for filtering error (FE) dynamics over a finite horizon. By means of the stochastic analysis method and the matrix inequality approach, a sufficient condition is derived to ensure the presence of the intended H∞ filter. The filter gain is acquired through the resolution of a recursive linear matrix inequality (LMI). Two simulation examples are conducted to confirm the availability of the discussed filter design scheme. •A time-varying system is established covering multi-rate sampling.•The non-fragile filter is designed for CPSs via WTOD protocol suffering DoS attacks.•A sufficient condition is proposed to ensure the performance of the filtering error.
