Abstract In 2 experiments, urea and molasses were fed to cattle grazing oat or wheat stubble, with cattle fistulated in the oesophagus or in the rumen in the second experiment to study responses, and metabolites in the rumen. Intakes of all supplements were highly variable among individuals but mean intakes of digestible organic matter were generally increased by supplementation. Although various parameters indicated likely deficiencies of energy and N in the diet, these supplements were generally of little benefit to cattle grazing cereal stubbles.
