Summary: | Using alternative fuels in diesel engines is a complicated task, as it is necessary to take into consideration further changes in power, economic and environmental characteristics. There are fuels that are very similar as to their chemical properties to conventional petroleum fuel. However, when using them one should bear in mind some of their specific features, such as cetane number, lower heating value, the proportion of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen in their composition, etc. All of these can have a significant impact on the workflow. The most promising of the samples investigated are renewable alternative fuels, such as methyl alcohol and rapeseed oil methyl ether. The paper presents the results of bench tests of a 2F 10.5/12.0 diesel engine operating on the above-mentioned biofuels. Consideration is given to power, economic and environmental performance of the engine depending on the speed change, and the possibility of using alternative fuels in diesels is assessed. |
