Abstract The effect of metaphor on responses to political communications was examined. In Study 1, we investigated whether a metaphor could increase memory for a passage and whether the effect might be greater when the passage was heard rather than read. Also examined were the relative effects of having the metaphor present at encoding, at recall, both, or neither. Participants either read or listened to four short passages. For half of the subjects, each passage was preceded by a metaphor. At recall, all subjects were presented with the corresponding metaphor for two of the four passages, as a retrieval cue. As predicted, subjects better recalled the passages when the metaphor was present at encoding. This effect tended to be stronger when the passage was presented orally. Presence of the metaphor at recall had no effect. In addition, presence of the metaphor led to significantly more positive ratings of both the passages and the speaker on a number of characteristics.
AbstractList The effects of metaphor on memory for speakers' arguments & inferences drawn from those arguments were examined in two studies. Study 1 examined the effects of a metaphor on memory for a passage & on perceptions of the passage & the speaker. Also examined were the relative effectiveness of orally presented vs written metaphors, & the effects of having metaphor present at encoding only, at recall only, or at both times. Stimuli consisted of four metaphors & associated passages chosen from political speeches & statements. Undergraduates (N = 126) read the passages & completed a 19-item questionnaire assessing reactions to various qualities of the passages & the qualities of the speaker. Recall of individual phrases from the passages was also tested. Study 2 examined the inferences drawn from passages & possible effects of metaphor on recall. Ss (N = 60) read a passage about seat belt legislation, a metaphor consistent with one of the positions expressed in the passage, or both. Ss then completed an opinion survey & a recall test. Overall results showed that Ss recalled passages better when they were preceded by an appropriate metaphor, particularly in oral presentation. Ss also thought passages were better organized & the speaker was a better communicator when the passage was preceded by a metaphor. Use of an appropriate metaphor was also found to affect beliefs in study 2. Implications regarding the use of metaphors in political communication are discussed. 5 Tables, 48 References. B.
