Abstract Seniors living in SROs cite specific satisfactions and reasons for staying there, as do managers who prefer to keep them. Hotels offer a unique environment that usually requires maintenance of autonomy and the overcoming of structural barriers to accessibility, but can also facilitate vital and casual social interactions and some informal assistance. Social structures within hotels provide some important lessons for the design of social service delivery concerning convenience, reciprocity, meaning and attachment to people, place and way of life.

Data obtained via informal interviews with personnel at single room occupancy (SRO) hotels in Chicago, Ill, (N not specified) are used to elucidate the specific satisfactions & reasons for elders staying there, along with the motivations of SRO managers to keep them. Hotels offer a unique environment that usually requires maintenance of autonomy & the overcoming of structural barriers to accessibility, but can also facilitate vital & casual social interactions & some informal assistance. Lessons derived from the social structures of SROs for the design of social service delivery concerning convenience, reciprocity, meaning & attachment to people, & way of life for the elderly are reviewed. 3 References.
