Laser potential of Pr3+ doped chalcogenide glass in 5-6 μm spectral range

•Mid-infrared (5.5-5.9 µm) stimulated emission of Pr3+ ions in selenide glass observed.•Laser oscillations at 3H5→3H4 transition of praseodymium ions registered.•An original cross-relaxation pumping scheme of Pr3+ ions utilized. Cross-relaxation processes in Pr3+ doped selenide glass provided effici...

Summary:•Mid-infrared (5.5-5.9 µm) stimulated emission of Pr3+ ions in selenide glass observed.•Laser oscillations at 3H5→3H4 transition of praseodymium ions registered.•An original cross-relaxation pumping scheme of Pr3+ ions utilized. Cross-relaxation processes in Pr3+ doped selenide glass provided efficient population of the lowest excited state 3H5 of Pr3+ ions under pulsed pumping by 1.54 µm Er:glass laser. Stimulated emission at 5.5-5.9 µm corresponding to 3H5→3H4 transition of Pr3+ ions was observed in vitreous matrix for the first time.
