Evidence from historical records and research suggests that in certain circumstances shelterwood systems and their variants that provide both structural and age-class diversity can be appropriate. Evidence from historical records and research suggests that in certain circumstances shelterwood systems and their variants that provide both structural and age-class diversity can be appropriate. We give examples of such systems in India, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia. The tropical forests of eastern Asia have been managed using cutting-based silviculture systems for 30 years. Even-aged silvicultural practices are appropriate economically and biologically in some settings. The shelterwood systems developed traditionally and their variations may be appropriate in that they provide both structural and age diversity. These systems rest on advance regeneration. The environmental trade-off between a one-time invasion for cutting versus smaller but more extensive invasions for mixed age stands must be examined in each situation. Examples of such silvicultural systems are drawn from tropical forests in India, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia |
