Summary:Year-to-year variation in stratification of Ariake Bay from 1990 to 2000 was investigated using monthly-observed water temperature and salinity data. Stratification has been weakened in Ariake Bay during recent years, because the density of surface water has increased due to an increase in surface salinity. Surface salinity increase is due to a decrease in river discharge and an increase of sea surface wind during summer in recent years.
