AbstractList An introduction to a special issue on morality in discourse examines the two approaches used in the contributions: (1) consideration of the principles & forms through which moral issues are shaped interactionally & (2) use of interaction as a starting point to analyze how moral concerns become relevant in & through the social organization of action. The historical relationship between morality & discourse is traced, & difficulties involved in the study of moral discourse are examined, including the tension between everyday morals & the morally neutral position of the social sciences. Proto-morality is discussed as a substructure of discourse, maintaining that proto-moral attributes are the structural preconditions of morality accepted as obligatory in any given society, &, therefore, the grounding from which utterances take on a moral meaning. The pertinent language & interaction literature that addresses moral discourse is reviewed, & changes that have occurred in the conditions of moral discourse in contemporary society are examined. 29 References.
