Antioxidant components and antioxidant activities of novel Korean pomegranates (Punica granatum L.) extracts

This study evaluated the antioxidant activities of three new types of pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) in Korea. The total polyphenol content and total flavonoid content were the highest at 24.63±0.04 mg TAE/g and 11.46 mg CE/g in Danmihong #15, respectively. Transition metal ion reduction power (PM...

Summary:This study evaluated the antioxidant activities of three new types of pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) in Korea. The total polyphenol content and total flavonoid content were the highest at 24.63±0.04 mg TAE/g and 11.46 mg CE/g in Danmihong #15, respectively. Transition metal ion reduction power (PMA and FRAP) showed the highest values at 88.75 mg AAE/g and 0.61 mM TE/g, respectively, in Danmihong #28. The DPPH radical scavenging activity was the highest at 1,761.09 μM TE/g in Shinmihong #4. ABTS radical scavenging activity was the highest at 96.59 μM TE/g Danmihong #28. The ORAC antioxidant activity was highest at 232.47 μM TE/g in Danmihong #15. This study systematically evaluated the antioxidant potential of three novel Korean pomegranate cultivars (Shinmihong #4, Danmihong #15, and Danmihong #28). These findings demonstrated significant antioxidant activity, suggesting their value as functional food ingredients for combating oxidative stress and enhancing human health.
