Summary:The gas metal arc welding process is widely used in various industries, especially the production of gas cylinders, since it can be processed rapidly and continuously. However, the shielding gas process often leaves defects in the specimens. Therefore, this work aimed to improve welding quality and reduce defects in the welding of ASME SA455 (SA455) based carbon steel by using the submerged arc welding (SAW) with shielding flux powder (classified ASME SFA 5.17) instead. In the study, the welding of carbon steel SA455 was operated by arc welding with the 0.9 mm diameter of SFA 5.18 ER70S-6 wire. The travel speed, heat input and welding defects were recorded and inspected. The results were found that the submerged arc welding flux could be used instead of carbon dioxide gas and provided the better welding quality with fewer defects. The welded specimen by SAW exhibited high mechanical properties of tensile and bending strengths according to the ASME Section IX and also demonstrated high joint efficiency.
