Summary:The joint analysis of precision X-ray diffraction data that were obtained for chlorophyll–protein complexes of purple bacteria and their high-resolution absorption spectra is the basis of a methodical approach that was developed for the determination of the dielectric constant in a microvolume that contains special pairs of the reaction centers of Rhodobacter sphaeroides . The most probable value of this parameter is in the range of 1.66–1.76. Based on this, the average value of this coefficient in the inner layers of the membranes of purple bacteria and plants is calculated to be 1.70–1.85. A low value of this parameter in the membranes of photosynthetic organisms significantly enhances the efficiency of energy migration from the masses of antenna chlorophylls to the reaction centers, which markedly increases the quantum yield of photosynthesis as a whole.
