Summary: | The root canal contents of 14 necrotic pulps with periapical radiolucent areas were examined bacteriologically. In a previous report, the ratio of positive cultures from cases of necrotic pulps without radiolucent areas was 72.7 %. In this present experiment, however, microorganisms were isolated from all the cases. These results indicate that the bacteria are closely related to bone resorption in the periapical region. Almost all isolates were obligate anaerobes (in 9 cases, all isolates were anaerobes). Among the anaerobes, Peptostreptococcus, Eubacterium and Bacteroides were predominant and these were rarely isolated from the root canals of necrotic teeth without radiolucent area. Eubacterium alactolyticum and Peptostreptococcus micros were most prevalent species. These bacteria were also isolated from root canal filled teeth with acute periapical pathosis. Therefore, it was concluded that the above bacteria may exert an important influence on the progress of periapical pathological conditions with bone destruction. |
