An Experience of Surgical Treatment for the Tibial and Fibular Fractures

We have surgically treated 52 fresh fractures and 16 delayed or non-union fractures of the tibia and fibula in 42 men and 26 women between 1976 and 1987. An a verage age was 45 years ald. The former included 22 malleoli, 20 tibial shafts, 8 tibial condyles and 2 tibial tuberosities, and the latter 8...

Abstract We have surgically treated 52 fresh fractures and 16 delayed or non-union fractures of the tibia and fibula in 42 men and 26 women between 1976 and 1987. An a verage age was 45 years ald. The former included 22 malleoli, 20 tibial shafts, 8 tibial condyles and 2 tibial tuberosities, and the latter 8 tibial shafts, 7 malleoli and one tibial condyle. Osteosynthesis materials, chiefly used in both of these cases were plates for tibial shafts, screws and tension band wiring methods for malleoli and tibia bolts for tibial condyles, Bone transplantation was used in 23 cases which were 15 fresh cases and 8 delayed or non-union cases. The result was that bony unions were obtained in all cases but two. One with arterial injury underwent amputation 7 days after osteosynthesis, and another remained as it was delayed union at the period of 11 months after synthesis for non-union. We discussed on the surgical treatments and results of the tibial and fibular fractures.
