Abstract | The measurement of the exhaust-gas energy is essential for the design of turbochargers. However, its direct measurement is next to impossible. The present authors have divised a simple method for this purpose. A part of the exhaust gas is extracted to expand to the atmosphere through a small measuring nozzle similar to the turbine nozzle. The momentum of the extracted gas is measured by the thrust on the cage, made up with piles of aluminum rings and a disc lined with wire gauzes, and the flow rate through an orifice. Thus the average ejecting velocity from the nozzle can be calculated. It was confirmed that the exhaust-gas energy can be measured with tolerable accuracy by the above mentioned method. |
