Summary:Persson discusses the Brown Derby mine in Gunnison County CO. Derby pegmatite group, located in the Quartz Creek pegmatite district, approximately 18 miles northeast of Gunnison in the high mountains of central Colorado. First mentioned by Eckel and later by Staatz and Trites, this locality has long been of interest to both collectors and mineralogists. In recent years, however, due to a combination of property access issues, remoteness, and a shift in focus of Colorado collecting to localities yielding better-known minerals such as amazonite and rhodochrosite, the Brown Derby pegmatite group seems all but forgotten. This article is not an attempt to eclipse or duplicate the already extensive literature on this locality, but rather to provide a modern and collector-oriented perspective on this fascinating deposit and an update on the status of mining and collecting at the most prolific deposit in this pegmatite group, the Brown Derby No. 1 pegmatite.
