| Abstract | The patient, 63 year old woman, who had suffered from rheumatoid arthritis since 13 years before her death and received the administration of steroids and gold treatment of two years' duration, was admitted to the hospital for dyspnea. Hepatosplenomegaly and the abnormal findings on liver function tests were observed throughout the hospital days. On 79th hospital day, she died of pneumonia. Autopsy revealed that the liver was enlarged and showed formation of multiple, light gray-colored nodules, less than 0.8cm in diameter. Microscopically, multiple nodules were characterized by innumerable small areas of focal hyperplasia of liver cells, without fibrosis, distinctively demarcated by adjacent compressed, atrophic liver cells. These morphological features are those characteristic of nodular regenerative hyperplasia of the liver reported by Steiner(2) previously. The nature of this process was discussed and review of the literatures was reported. |
