Summary: | When the cross-section of the enameled steel is observed with the reflected light, a string of metallic particles can be seen in the enamel phase in a little distance from the iron base. Hitherto, however, no coincident explanations have been given why these iron particles take such a peculiar distribution. By a special method, the author obtained a specimen in which the large metallic iron particles appeared; the distribution of the particles was exactly the same, but the size was more than about 100 times and, moreover, the distance between the particles and the surface of iron base was 10-100 times of those observed in the commercial enameled steel. By the microscopic study of the thin section of this specimen by using the transmitted light, it was found that; (1) a string of metallic particles observed under the reflected light is the cross-section of a chain structure, which consists of the entangled numerous minute, needle-like, iron metallic crystals, and (2) the crystallisation of the minute metallic iron takes place at the top of the diffusion of ferrous oxide. The needle like metallic iron thus crystallized are then pushed up by the evolution of gas bubbles from the iron base and scraped together to form a chain structure. |
