| Abstract | During the winter rainfall season, water of good quality flowing from mountains in the western Cape Province, South Africa, is collected in a reservoir and released to the Breede river for downstream use for irrigation in summer. The river also receives continuous inflow of saline irrigation return water from drainage ditches and from saline groundwater, resulting in an increase in the salinity of the river water. Results are summarized from a study to assess the saline non-point contribution of saline groundwater seepage along the affected reach of the river, and various conclusions are drawn. |
