| AbstractList | Abstract only A response argues that James R. Abbott's comment on Klausner's critique of E. Digby Baltzell (both, 1998) fails to recognize that the content of Blatzell's moral judgments were never disputed by Klausner, whose essay was a methodological, not a value, analysis. It is maintained that it is logical & efficient for social scientists intending to project moral values through research, whether conservative or liberal, to use an individualist frame of reference. It is contended that Abbott misunderstands serious methodological concerns as an attack on Baltzell's values, & examples are given to expose Abbott's misinterpretation of comments on "concrete individuals." It is admitted that a personal value position may have influenced the discussion of cultural pluralism; however, it is maintained that the assertion that Baltzell believed "Anglo conformity" is necessary for social consensus is accurate. Factual errors pointed out by Abbott are acknowledged, & the use of one frame of reference to analyze work done in another is discussed. J. Lindroth |
