Summary:Four supracondylar and intercondylar fractures of the femur in eighteen patients were reduced and stabilized with extensive surgical approach techniques. The results were rated as excellent in two cases, satisfactory in one, and unsatisfactory in one. An extensive surgical exposure, accomaplished by elevation of the tibial tuberosity with the attached extensor mechanism, can facilitate the reduction and fixation of severely comminuted intra-articular fractures of the distal end of the femur.
