Abstract Sixteen blackgram [ Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper] genotypes were evaluated against yellow mosaic disease under field conditions and identified nine genotypes as resistant, one as moderately resistant, four genotypes as susceptible and two as highly susceptible based on modified MULLaRP scale (0–9). None of the genotypes were highly resistant or immune against yellow mosaic disease. By using validated sequence characterized amplified region (SCAR) markers BG-YMV-Q1, the genotypes showing resistant and tolerant responses in field screening trials were evaluated for resistance among the 16 genotypes that were screened for the desired amplicons of 532 bp that was linked to yellow mosaic disease resistance. The SCAR markers amplified with the desired band only in the resistant genotypes, while in susceptible genotypes, no amplification was observed. Symptoms were more prominent in the genotypes KPU-1, KPU-9, KPU-22, OBG-32, LBG-623, Co5 than DKU-87, DKU-102, KPU 12-133 and UG-218. Pod and seed shapes varied with genotype. The infection had negligible impact on vegetative characters of DKU-87, MYMV resistant genotype. Symptoms were more prominent in the genotypes KPU-1, KPU-9, KPU-22, OBG-32, LBG-623, Co5 than DKU-87, DKU-102, KPU 12-133 and UG-218. Pod and seed shapes varied with genotypes. Significant difference in yield components were observed among blackgram genotypes due to infection. Negative correlation existed between yield components and disease severity.
