Abstract Research subject: improvement of approaches to heat supply systems design by the introduction of the specialized range of tools including CAD and CAE software at the early stages of development. The reasons for the differences in quality of the ongoing projects of district heating networks were considered taking into account the integration of new approaches to calculation, review, presentation of results of design engineering in expert training programs. Special attention is given to the method of maintaining the level of professional qualification of design documentation executors in the heat supply field. Materials and methods: the basic research method was the observation of the results of district heating networks design by the reference groups of executors in the groups with integrated new methods and groups applying traditional approaches. The costs of project implementation from the stage of design specification to the stage of project documentation execution as well as accepted design solutions were compared. Results: the advantage of new approaches to the design and calculation of heat supply network structures was demonstrated. Conclusions: heat supply systems are one of the key elements of the common infrastructure of populated areas. In some instances, the heat supply systems appear to be a complex of facilities with a record level of investments at both the design and construction stage and the operational stage. Thus, the improvement of approaches to design and analysis of heat supply systems can be of great importance on a national economy scale. The article proposes approaches to the improvement of design methods as well as procedure of personnel training and recruitment in design organizations.
