| Abstract | RESUMO Foram estudados 434 espécimes pertencentes à Cheilolejeunea rigidula (Nees ex Mont.) R.M. Schust. de várias coleções de herbários, bem como provenientes de coletas recentes. Com o estudo de vários espécimes foi possível a verificação da grande variação morfológica apresentada por Cheilolejeunea rigidula. Contudo, a observação detalhada de um conjunto de características do gametófito, permite a correta identificação da espécie. Dessa forma, a espécie pode ser reconhecida considerando-se o seguinte conjunto de caracteres: (1) lobo dos filídios orbiculares a suborbiculares, com margem dorsal e ventral inteira, ápice arredondado; (2) trigônios distintos, pequenos a grandes, espessamentos intermediários ausentes; (3) ocelos ausentes; (4) anfigastros obovalados a subobovalados, sinus agudo (nunca lunado), lobos triangulares (nunca filiformes), base cuneada (nunca arredondada ou auriculada), linha de inserção levemente curva; (5) inovação sempre lejeuneóide, geralmente única, raramente pareada; (6) gametófitos dioicos, raramente monoicos (monoico apenas em C. rigidula var. autoica C.J. Bastos & Gradst.).
ABSTRACT A total of 434 specimens belonging to the Cheilolejeunea rigidula (Nees ex Mont.) R.M. Schust. from herbarium collections and from recent collections were studied. It was possible to verify a large morphological variation presented by Cheilolejeunea rigidula. However, detailed observation of combined gametophyte characteristics, allows the correct identification of the species. Thus, the species can be recognized considering the following set of characters: (1) leaf lobe orbicular to suborbicular, with entire dorsal and ventral margins, rounded apex; (2) trigones distinct, small to large, intermediate thickenings absent; (3) ocelli absent; (4) underleaves obovate to subobovate, sinus acute (never lunate), lobes triangular (never filiform), base cuneate (never rounded or auriculate), line of insertion slightly curved; (5) innovations always lejeuneoid, usually unique, rarely paired; (6) dioecious, rarely monoecious (monoecious only in C. rigidula var. autoica C.J.
