| Abstract | With the example of Wycherley’s first comedy, Love in a Wood (1672), the paper aims at giving a brief account of the nature of the links between several aspects of the pastoral tradition and Restoration comedy. Various deviations from the original model – through the use of parody and satire – herald Love in a Wood as an early « mock-pastoral », which was to become so popular a mode in the eighteenth century. In the Restoration days, though, the use of pastoral drama clearly serves satiric purposes and offers a convenient medium to ridicule the hated figure of the Puritan hypocrite. In Wycherley’s play, the presence of pastoralism is arguably a means to suggest distance. |
