Abstract A 54-year-old man and a 58-year-old woman were admitted to our hospital for a further examination of liver dysfunction. A large defect in the falciform ligament was accidentaly observed by laparoscopy in both cases. They had had no gastrointestinal complaints. Cases with a defect in the falciform ligament are rare. Only 28 cases have been reported in the world for these 57 years. Twenty two cases were diagnosed at the time of operation of intestinal obstruction due to herniation of a loop of small bowel through the defect of the falciform ligament. Six of 7 cases reported in Japan were observed by laparoscopy.
