Interracial and Interethnic Marriages among Asian Americans

This study systemically analyzes intermarriage patterns among Asian Americans, one of the fastest-growing racial groups and who have one of the highest intermarriage rates in the United States. Utilizing the 2000 US Census PUMS data, interracial and interethnic marriage patterns of six major Asian groups in the country are examined. The results from log-linear models reveal that intermarriage patterns of Asian subgroup vary greatly showing unique marital signature in which each Asian subgroup has a quite different intermarriage rate and the gendered pattern in intermarriage, where Asian women intermarry at a higher rate than men, is not pervasive across all Asian subgroups. It is also found that the marriage to a non-Hispanic white is still dominant for some of the groups, but the propensity of pan-Asian intermarriage is quite strong across all Asian subgroups. My study suggests that the segmented assimilation theory, which summarizes how different patterns of intergroup relations are forming among diverse immigrant groups through interracial and interethnic marriages, has more explanatory power than traditional assimilation theory in analyzing Asian American intermarriage.
