Maps that are used for orientation, already appeared early in the history of human civilisation. The first cartographic references stem from the early historical times of Mesopotamia and Turkey. Maps, that portray a specific topic in their message, emerged much later, approximately at the beginning of the 17th century. These maps represented more than merely geographic locations whereby new graphical forms were used to visualise other information. Towards the end of the 18th century, the thematic charting of maps containing geological, economical and medical content was undertaken and proliferated. The thematic processing of subject matter in maps rapidly found its way into the mass media and into the era of web 2.0 and locations based applications (LBA).
