First record of Siberian tundra Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus calidus) in South Korea

The Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) is a bird of prey in the family Falconidae, and is distributed worldwide, except in the Antarctic. This is the first record of the Siberian tundra Peregrine Falcon Falco peregrinus calidus in South Korea. The first record was of an individual (dead) collected at Seosan on November 3, 2011; the second individual was observed at Haenam, Jeollanam-do on December 30, 2012; the third was observed at Busan on October 15, 2013; and the fourth and fifth were both observed at Goseong, Gangwon-do on January 9, 2015 and January 24, 2016, respectively. The first three individuals observed were males in their first winter plumage, while the fourth and fifth individuals were both adult females. To date, only two subspecies have been recorded in Korea: the breeding subspecies F. p. japonensis and the winter migratory subspecies Peale’s Peregrine Falcon F. p. pealei. As the first record of F. p. calidus wintering in Korea, this report provides important information on field marks for the field identification and the distribution of Peregrine Falcon subspecies.
