Summary:A certain relation exists between adrenocortical function and ascorbic acid. In his excellent review on this subject Pirani (1952) concluded that the nature of this relation is fundamentally unknown. Many data have been collected which show that ascorbic acid is capable of mitigating some symptoms of the alarm reaction, especially in animals (vide Pirani). In the following we will describe an example of this action in man. During an experiment on recruits in which we aimed to study the level of circulating eosinophils during training and the influence of ascorbic acid on this level (Rümke, 1953) an imminent smallpox epidemic necessitated vaccination. In most cases we dealt with recruits who underwent primary vaccination, and only these results will be reported. A study on the influence of vaccination on the eosinophils was not intended. If this had been so the experiment would have been planned differently. Nevertheless we were able to
