Abstract Aim To identify how comfortable staff felt with various components of resuscitation of children and to recognise if there are any learning needs for providing high quality resuscitation. Method A questionnaire survey was performed with the questions focusing on various practical aspects of resuscitation. Likert’s scale of graded scoring was used, with a score of 1 to 5. Space was provided for any free text comments. The questionnaire was e-mailed to the group and paper copies were also provided. Results Twenty two staff members, including both nursing and medical staff replied to the questionnaire within 72 h, with a response rate of 58%. 90% of them had paediatric life support training. A score of less than 3 was considered as being uncomfortable. 32% mentioned that they were not aware of the locally available equipment, their location and did not feel comfort in using the resuscitation equipment. 50% of nursing staff scored 3 for bag and mask ventilation. Awareness of the roles of various team members in the resuscitation and expectations was also unclear for some. Leading the resuscitation, while being hands-on in the resident shifts compared to the standard light house-model of leadership was also felt to be challenging. Conclusion Paediatric Life Support Courses provide structured resuscitation training. However individual and institutional training needs seem to be much wider, especially with the changing model of paediatric care. Locally run resuscitation simulation training might help address these needs and improve the quality of resuscitations and their outcomes.
