| AbstractList | The island consists of limestone loaded with equatorial reef fossils dating to millions of years ago. Geologists Jim Baichtal leads the expedition with his x-ray imagination which allows him to see the tropical lands beneath the temperate-zone old growth. Rain is rapidly eroding the limestone, leaving sinkholes and lateral conduits which form karst. Karst is a porous landscape that is the key to productive ecosystems. A limestone habitat in Alaska is being threatened by clear-cutting. The limestone in Tongass is exceptional because of its abundant fractures and faults. Links between the limestone stratum on Prince of Wales Island, in the Tongass National Forest, AK, to the rainforest ecology and salmon runs in the region are explained. Numerous sinkholes, caves, and lateral conduits form a karst landscape on which a highly productive old-growth hemlock and spruce forest grows. The possible impacts of logging on cave, rainforest, and aquatic ecosystems are considered. The forest has been inventoried and classified into low, moderate, or high-vulnerability areas, in terms of logging impacts. The region is also important for its archeological finds-some caves show evidence of very early human use. |
