A new creodont Metapterodon stromeri nov. sp. (Hyaenodontidae, Mammalia) from the Early Miocene of Langental (Sperrgebiet, Namibia)

The recovery of a new species of small creodont from the Early Miocene of coastal Namibia including associated upper and lower dental elements reveals that the group is in need of revision. Previously, East African samples assigned to Metapterodon consisted only of maxillae while Isohyaenodon was only represented by lower jaws. It is now clear that the East African Metapterodon specimens represent the upper jaws of Isohyaenodon, while the Namibian material belongs to a separate genus Metapterodon which seems to be absent from East Africa. La découverte, sur la côte namibienne, de dents supérieures et inférieures associées appartenant à une nouvelle espèce de créodonte de petite taille du Miocène inférieur nous oblige à réviser le groupe. Les échantillons anciens est-africains rapportés à Metapterodon étaient constitués exclusivement de maxillaires, alors que ceux attribués à Isohyaenodon étaient constitués de mâchoires inférieures. Les pièces du Metapterodon est-africain seraient, en fait, les mâchoires supérieures de Isohyaenodon, tandis que le matériel namibien est rapporté à Metapterodon, genre qui serait absent en Afrique orientale.
