Scientists characterized the developmental history of peatland and dry land vegetation within the Ob-Vasugan watershed of western Siberia based on analyses of the characteristics of plant communities in the region and evidence of historical climatic changes revealed by stratigraphic, spore-pollen and super(14)C data derived from a vertical peat profile <">Vodorasdel." Researchers divided observed changes in the palaeoecological environment over the past 10,000 years into five different periods. Climate during the Holocene was characterized according to these five periods. Evidence showed that peatland forming processes in the watershed under analysis were initiated some 9510 years in the past, producing a 550 cm accumulation of peat. Reductions in peat accumulation with time are detailed.
