Abstract | Behavior analysts have generally remained loyal to the original principles of operant conditioning first proposed by Watson and Skinner. Because of this many behaviorists have tended to restrict their treatment populations to individuals with autism and developmental disabilities. In recent years, behaviorists have begun to apply these principles to understanding and analyzing therapeutic approaches to various clinical populations. The papers in this issue deal with significant societal problems from a purist behavioral (in the sense of using principles of operant conditioning) or a cognitive behavioral (e.g. social learning theory) perspective and argue for the inclusion of theories and research that might be outside of these perspectives as adjuncts for better understanding and treatment of various psychiatric disorders or physical problems. |
